It started with a burp...or was it a belch?

Here's the kind of conversation that comes from a nurse speaking with her parents on a lazy afternoon:

Me: (burped) Excuse me, I burped.
Dad: Was that a burp? Sounded like a belch.
Me: (the pivotal question here) Isn't that the same thing?
Mom: A burp is a burp. A belch is more...on purpose.
Me: They're synonyms. Either way it's an expulsion of gas from the esophogus.
Dad: Burp, belch, and hiccup. What's the difference?
Me: No, a hiccup is a spasm of the diaphragm. Totally different.
Mom: Well, then what about gas from (points) the other end?
Me: Flatulance.
Mom: What if it's on purpose?
Me: Still flatulance.
